There's one for sale in my neck of the woods. Exactly as pictured, but not actual car.

1 owner

all service records available, everything performed at the city's best Porsche shop

186,000 kms (!)

brakes and tires 70%

price is right

I've been looking for a 996 Aero 6-speed for some time now. I've wanted a silver 996 GT3 since the day I realized my elementary school's neighbour had one. It used to make my day when it was parked outside. Anyways, since my budget does not allow for a GT3 of any shape or kind, I'd have to make do with an aero kit 996, with sport suspension, short shifter, and rear wheel drive.

General thoughts on the 996, aero kits, and high mileage 996s are appreciated. Thanks.

Didn't these have problems with bearings going and ruining the engines?

Hate to say this, but Google it: https://www.google.com/search?q=porsc… The first link looks especially helpful.

There is one thing you should specifically worry about: IMS bearing failure:

http://boxsterguide.blogspot.com/2010/09/interm… This article helps explain some details of the IMS bearing problem experienced by Porsches built in the early 2000's. It is specifically about Boxters, but the problem and solutions are very similar on the 996. The article is over 3 years old, so I don't know if any new replacement parts are available since it was written.

You should consider doing some more research on this topic. I suppose you would also want to know if the bearing has been replaced on the vehicle you are looking at.

As for upgrades, I heard one once with a uprated exhaust and it sounded fantastic. I think it was a Borla system, but I'm really not sure. I apologize for the anecdotal endorsement; it may have been a completely different company. Additionally, I've heard short throw shifters are a very popular upgrade.

Also, I agree that the 996 GT3 or aero kit looks best in silver; well, that or black.

It's the IMS bearing, and I think that's a concern on pretty much any Porsche from before 2006 (?)

Budget for an IMS upgrade with that price. They exist, and they seem to help a lot with hedging your bets against failures. The earlier cars are easier to do the fix on—later, the wonky IMS parts that tend to grenade get moved further INTO the engine, and that sucks.

Conventional wisdom seems to think that cars that make it up to high mileage without any IMS issues are less likely to go boom, so the high mileage may actually be a plus, haha. Still, I'd look into getting the fix done just in case.

I know I give the 996 crap for the design not being my thing, but I like this idea. Your car, you like it, you should buy it.

Thanks a lot. That was very insightful. The owner claims that the servicing is up to date, and personally looked after by the master technician at one of our best Porsche dealers in town. The owner is an enthusiast with the cash to look after the car, so my guess is (pending an inspection) that he is aware of common issues with the early 996s and he's either fixed them or made a note of them. Either way, if these issues are outstanding, it devalues the car significantly.

The bit you mentioned about high mileage 996s being a good indicator is interesting.

Thanks again and I'll be sure to keep OPPO posted!
